St Mary's Church • Burgh Parva

The village of Burgh Parva fell into a gradual decline in the medieval period, after which the parish was merged with neighbouring Melton Constable in 1665. The village vanished and the church fell into ruins.

When the railway came to Melton Constable in the 19th century there was an influx of new people to the village and this prompted the building of a temporary corrugated iron church on the sight. The new church was consecrated in 1903 and although there was a call for a new permanent church to be built, it never happened. The 'temporary' church is still in use and a distinctive feature in the churchyard.

The ruins of St Mary were given Grade II listing status in 1959. Some evidence in the masonry suggest this could have been quite an early structure, though most of what's left is 15th and 16th century.

There is nothing left to see of the medieval village of Burgh Parva.
