The site of the Roman fort of Branodvnum. The fort was constructed in the 230s and would become one of the eleven such forts to form the Saxon Shore Fort system around the South and East coast of England. The fort system was used to control and protect shipping, as well as defend for overseas raiders. They were only abandoned when the Romans finally withdrew from England.
Possible evidence indicates it was used during the Anglo-Saxon period.
The Time Team TV series visited the site in 2012 and the show was broadcast in 2013.
The site is now owned and cared for by the National Trust as part of the Brancaster Estate.
