Greyfriars Tower • Kings Lynn

Greyfriars tower is the last significant remains of a Franciscan friary which once stood here. The Franciscan Order habitually wore grey robes and this is why they were known as the Grey Friars.

The friary was one of sixty such foundations established by the Franciscan order in England. It was founded in the 1230s and by the mid 1300s supported just under 40 friars. Although the main body of the Friary was a victim of the Dissolution in 1538, the tower was allowed to remain.

It served the town as a seamark for sailors navigating the coast for many centuries and now the tower is surrounded by a garden for rest and contemplation. Nearby are King's Lynn's war memorials, which include one dedicated to the Burma Campaign.
